In the novel, the conch establishes hope and order in the society, but also becomes corrupt and overrun by the evil in humanity. The conch symbolizes the power and order required in the tribe for the boys to construct a civilization. Its importance is shown as Golding describes the shell as, “ever so valuable…In color the shell was deep cream, touched here and there with fading pink” (Golding 15-16). The precious shell is portrayed as simple and beautiful yet influential and powerful, just as seen in the civilization the boys form on the island.
