Poetry Essay
Louise Glück was born April 22, 1943 in New York City. It has been said that she is a very dark writer, however she is a very good poet this is proven by the many awards and recognitions she has received throughout her career. Glück won the Pulitzer prize for poetry in 1993 for her collection on The Wild Iris. She was known for taking readers on an inner journey by exploring their deepest and most intimate feelings. Louise Glück’s poetry is at times sensitive, and periodically illustrates loneliness. In Faithful and Virtuous Night, Glück writes “Somewhere, in the far backward reaches of time, my mother and father were embarking on their last journey,” (12) as a reader you can see the narrator’s parent’s passing was very tough. When Glück uses allusion to describe her darkness, and she uses imagery to describe her feelings. Glück leaves a lasting impression on her readers.

The narrator of the poem is happy about the memories that they have, but saddened by the event’s that took place. “On my bed, sheets printed with colored sailboats conveying, simultaneously, visions of adventure (in the form of exploration) and sensations of gently rocking, as of a cradle”. (Glück 8) The reader can only see the narrator thinking back to when she was a baby, and her parents were still alive. She stated that her aunt got her gifts, and her brother got her chocolate for her birthday, yet she feels alone.
