1. Plot – Write a summary in 4-5 sentences.
The plot of the story states that Louise Mallard has a heart problem, so she must be aware of her husband’s death in a very careful manner. Her sister, Josephine, tells her the news. Louise’s husband’s friend, Richards, learned about a railroad disaster when he was in the newspaper office and saw Louise’s husband, Brently, on the list of those killed. Louise begins weeping when Josephine tells her of Brently’s death and goes upstairs to be alone in her room. After jumping from one thought to the next and gazing out the window, she feels a sudden relief. She fantasizes about all the days and years ahead and hopes that she lives a long life. Once her sister comes back to get her, as she walks downstairs she realizes that Brently had never died. Louise screams and is overjoyed and suddenly dies from a heart attack.

In what ways is this passage significant? "She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life. The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In the street below a peddler was crying his wares. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves." Answer: The open window represents freedom- she is now free. The new spring life signifies her new life she will now be having. The experiences she has while looking through the window foreshadow the life she is expecting to have and hopes to live a long one. The rain, the flowers, the birds twittering all seem new to her and she listens very carefully and smells the rain, representing the beginning of a new independent
