When the war ended, Francis joined the democratic party and helped during the reconstruction. He became the Governor of Louisiana. One of the citizen said: “There was a reverent quality about [him]; he was truly one of us yet apart. He seemed so noble and always in command of his senses and emotions.” (p88). This description shows how the citizens feel about Francis Nicholls. His political decisions made the state improved and get better and made progress in racial relations in three years.
