The Importance of Love in Frankenstein The gothic novel, Frankenstien, written by Mary Shelley, demonstrates the importance of loving relationships in our lives. The author uses the monster’s desire for a wife to demonstrate this. First, having a wife would allow someone to nurture him. For example, she could help to gather food and work with him. Another reason that he desires a wife is that she could provide him with love. The monster had been neglected by all other humans throughout his life. Humans preform the best when they work together. If the monster had a wife, she could help gather food and work with him which would increase his chances for survival. This would provide the monster with a sense of belonging which he has never felt. For example, the monster states to Victor, “I am alone and miserable”(160). He feels this way because all of his life, he has never been nurtured or taken care of by anyone else. He sees how people are nurtured when he is watching De Lacey’s family. The monster sees how despite De Lacey blindness, he is still being taken care of by his family. This is the opposite of the monster’s life with how he was never taken care of despite of his disability. He is troubled at Victor for not providing the nourishment he needed after he was created. His anger towards him is demonstrated when he kills William. The monster feels that as his creator, Victor should have provided him with the nurture he needed. This had lead to the monster being angry at Victor and killing his family. If he was properly taken care of by his creator, the monster may not have turned evil. He sees that having a wife could put an end to this because she could provide him with the nourishment that he needs. Second, having a wife would provide the monster with love. Love gives the monster a purpose to live and a more meaningful life. Lastly, a wife would serve as a companion for the monster.
