Set within the city of Verona, William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, is a tragic play about two young “star-cross’d lovers” who both come from two rival families, Montagues and Capulets as to which their bitter quarrel ends with the heartbreaking deaths of Romeo and Juliet. The events of the romantic play are often propelled by through love and hate. Though the theme of love clearly impacts the characters more than that of hate within the play. Love can be seen as the higher power in Romeo and Juliet from their initial affection for each other to their untimely death as well as Romeos feelings to that of Tybalt.
The power of love can be shown to outweigh that of anger during Romeo and Juliet’s first confrontation. During their meet the …show more content…
Within the scene Juliet expresses “Oh, how can he hide such an evil heart with such a beautiful face?” and continues so fourth disliking Romeo until her love for him quickly conquers that of hate. This is evident with in the act when Juliet speaks “Tybalt is dead, and Romeo-banished. That one word “banished”, hath slain ten thousand Tybalts.” Which means that though Tybalt is dead Juliet would have preferred him to die one thousand times over to see Romeo unpunished. This further proves that even though in the beginning, Juliet displayed hate towards Romeo who had slaughtered Tybalt she eventually forgives Romeo and once more, forwards her love to him. The feelings revealed within this act effectively demonstrates the extent of power and influence love inhabits, overwhelming even the strongest amount of hate one can possess.
Thus, through extensive analyzation and research of various scenes from that of Romeo and Juliet’s foremost encounter to their ill-fated death as long with Romeo’s relations towards Tybalt it is clear that love and hate are the driving forces within this play.
