Hopefully this is a signal of change and PREA is just the beginning of justice and safer environments in U.S. jails.
It is sad to think how women are so unsafe in a place that should make them better for society. Nevertheless, if they were all like Boo (dangerous convict on the show) they could take care of themselves just fine. Unfortunately, the Netflix show and society’s judging make us think that prison is for serious criminals who have probably done something really bad to end up there. However, in reality, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, over 50% of inmates are locked up for non-violent crimes while just 3% are for homicide, aggravated assault, and kidnapping offenses. According to the United States Sentencing Commission most of the women are incarcerated for having in possession less than 100 grams of substance. Immediately we can relate with Dayanara or Taystee who worked or were barely related with a bigger drug dealer. As happened to Piper, she was caught up for doing a small operation on a big operation. In a statement made by the Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Charles Samuels Jr., he stated that overcrowding influences “the rate of violence and, in this way, were able to isolate and review the impact that crowding and the inmate-to-staff ratio had on serious assaults”. Therefore, all of this factors as busy defenders, mandatory minimums, and overcrowding are making prisons unhealthier and more dangerous than it normally
