Gender dynamics within the workplace have long been a subject of sociological inquiry. One particularly intriguing facet of this discourse is the allocation of physical tasks, which often raises questions about gender-based differences in job duties and responsibilities. In this study, we aim to investigate whether men, instead of women, predominantly perform the physical tasks at Lowes Foods. In this setting, the dynamics of gender, work, and community intersect, shaping the experiences and interactions of employees at Lowes Foods. The store's workforce reflects the diverse fabric of Mount Airy, comprising individuals from varied backgrounds and walks of life. Further analysis considered the gender distribution among managerial positions within the store. Out of the total managerial staff, comprising ten individuals, four were women while six were men. Interestingly, these managerial roles were distributed across different departments within the store. Over the observation period, it was evident that men were more frequently tasked with duties such as transporting trash to the compactor, collecting shopping carts from the store's exterior, disposing of trash from the trashcans within the store premises, and utilizing cleaning machinery for floor maintenance—additionally, positions requiring tasks like closing bagging or janitorial duties predominantly featured male employees. Women were commonly observed in customer-facing roles at the front of the store, mainly operating cash registers or managing monetary transactions in the office. Notably, departments such as registers, bakery, and deli exhibited more female employees than their male counterparts.
