Once the leaders of the American and Latin American revolutions recognized the threat of loyalist identity and reverence for the mother country among colonists, their priority became distinguishing the colonial identity from the mother country through the disillusionment of the people by discouraging loyalist views on their path to independence. In 1776, Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence presented the justification for the separation of the 13 colonies from England not just to other countries, but also to the colonists themselves.
