The landed aristocracy and the peasants are the two major opposing classes of characters that are in The House of the Spirits. A larger population of those from the Latin America and the characters in the novel are found to belong to the classes of characters that have been mentioned above. Those in the civil service are the only class that can be distinguished from others. As it can be seen from Esteban Garcia those that are peasants can opt to join the police or the army forces which will enable them gain access to higher class status and education. In the novel, the Garcias are used to present those who are peasants while the Trueba and del Valle are representing those who are the upper class and own land who are usually referred to as
