With the 18th amendment being passed and prohibiting the production, transport, and sale of alcohol, organized crime began to become a huge issue in the United States. Although not all crime was associated with alcohol and did not begin with the banning of alcohol, it was a very big catalyst for the spread of organized crime and the many, many crime families(Mafia)across the U.S.A. One large crime family was the Genovese crime family, previously called the Luciano crime family, who was found in New York. Two of the popular gangsters from this family was Lucky Luciano, and Vito Genovese, who both had very big contributions to the organized crime in the U.S. as well as the development of the Genovese crime family. His years of criminal acts started when he was very young, selling narcotics as a teen, and forcing kids to pay him so that they would not get beaten up. Luciano was also reported to being involved in many beatings and murders, with the Five Points gang. In October of 1929 Luciano was kidnapped, severely beaten and, stabbed. He was left unconscious on a Staten Island in New York. He was found by a police officer and taken to a hospital, where he was interviewed by detectives. After this event he was given the name “Lucky” because he had survived such an awful event that could have left him dead. Living in a luxury suite in new york, Luciano had no problems with his life until the mob assassination of renegade schultz put him under investigation by the attorney of new york. He was later convicted of extortion and direction of harlotry and was sentenced to thirty to fifty years in prison. Luciano was freed from prison in 1946 and was deported to Italy. He immediately resumed his criminal activities there. He later traveled to Havana, Cuba, to meet with other mafia members. When the U.S. found out he was Havana, he was ordered out of Cuba and sent back to Italy. He then lived in Naples, where he had ideas of books and movies depicting his career.
