His years of criminal acts started when he was very young, selling narcotics as a teen, and forcing kids to pay him so that they would not get beaten up. Luciano was also reported to being involved in many beatings and murders, with the Five Points gang. In October of 1929 Luciano was kidnapped, severely beaten and, stabbed. He was left unconscious on a Staten Island in New York. He was found by a police officer and taken to a hospital, where he was interviewed by detectives. After this event he was given the name “Lucky” because he had survived such an awful event that could have left him dead. He was later convicted of extortion and direction of harlotry and was sentenced to thirty to fifty years in prison. Luciano was freed from prison in 1946 and was deported to Italy.
