14-1 Question #3 According to the theses, the leaders of the church have failed to teach true Christian doctrine by offering people to give money to the church to release one of his sins. Luther acknowledges that this is wrong, and this decision would be made by God alone. Luther states “21. Thus those preachers of indulgences are in error who say that by the indulgences of the pope a man is freed and saved from all punishment… 28. Its is certain that, when the money rattles in the chest, avarice and gain may be increased, but the effect of the intercession of the Church depends on the will of God alone…. 35. They preach no Christian doctrine who teach that contrition is not necessary for those who buy souls [out of purgatory] or buy confessional licenses.”

The image shows Luther as the Greek hero Hercules, who is holding the dead hydra, whose nine heads were depicted as church leaders such as monks and priests.
