MTSS: Greater Struggle For Students With Learning Disability

1. MTSS is necessary as there are many students with small or greater deficits with learning that need support to prevent the development of a learning disability or a much greater struggle with learning as they continue to grow. As students progress through the grades, the work and learning that is expected of them becomes more and more demanding. Skills and knowledge that is being learned each year is built upon the following year. If there is a struggle with learning in elementary grades that is not addressed, there is a high risk that the struggle will only become bigger, thus resulting in less education and learning success for students. However, if support through early intervention is given within the MTSS framework, students with struggles in specific areas can be helped quickly through different supports, possibly through simple instructional changes or some extra practice as well, to prevent future educational failures.

When thinking about this and how it relates to my philosophy, I believe that all children have the ability to learn, to be successful with their learning, and that they can achieve the highest of learning that they can achieve. In order for that to happen, however, they have to be supported by the adults around them, including myself, in both academic and social competencies. Social development plays a huge role in academic development and with learning, as social development promotes the sense of belonging to a group and develops social competencies that not all students will develop outside of school. Without supporting both academic and social development, students will become less emotionally balance, struggle with feeling accepted and thus begin to lose focus on the academic aspect of
