Throughout the quarter in MUS6/ANTH 6 we have learned about music in different regions of the world and how they can be used traditionally. During this course we were also exposed to several problematic issues that arise in music and culture. For this Final paper I decided to choose question option #2. Of the many issues we went over in class, I personally believe that globalization, authenticity, and identity are the most significant issues when talking about world music. Globalization can be defined as an increasing connectivity around the world with respect to many spheres of life and the taking up of values and practices in multiple locations simultaneously. Later many cambodians, laotians, and vietnamese who were political refugees managed to expand this idea of “karaoke”. To this day karaoke continues to be something used all across the United States. Some very popular examples of globalization would be Mariachi music (Mexico) and tango music (Argentina). Authenticity can be defined as something that is done to look real or not fake. In world music authenticity is something very controversial, mainly when it comes to musical performances. Through this class I was able to experience what authenticity really was first hand by attending a Taiko performance for my music ethnography paper. When in a performance authenticity is key because viewers usually want to experience the different cultures being performed. When talking about music and identity we can say that music is part of our personal identity and is part of what makes us who we are. Not only does music make up our identity but music has its own kind of identity as well. Every kind of music has its own identity which is made up of the dances, traditions, rituals..etc, that are done while the song
