Ambition Embedded in Human Nature within Macbeth and To Kill A Mockingbird It is evident that ambition is embedded in human nature and is a primary factor that humans are driven by. Ambition can be described as a deep eagerness and desire to achieve and strive further. Whether in the race of earning success and pride, or for simply making a positive mark in society, ambition starts it all. Similarly, characters within two extremely famous texts have displayed how ambition has motivated their actions and beliefs. Within Shakespeare's Macbeth and Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, several characters are driven by ambition which has directed them either to their success or to their downfall. In terms of Macbeth, he had been originally driven by ambition. He was a fearless individual who had been driven by his ambition of achieving and holding the honorable title as King of Scotland. On the other hand, Mayella was fearful in terms of her character, but it was really her desire and ambition to appease her father- whose ambition was to reinforce the racial hierarchy in Maycomb, This was the primary reason of her hiding the truth. Both Mayella and Macbeth’s fears were driven by ambition. Therefore, it is clear that in both Macbeth and To Kill A Mockingbird, the characters were primarily driven by ambition, which had led them to their success or their downfall. This was prevalent and exemplified through Macbeth’s ambitious decisions, Bob Ewell’s ambition towards racism, Macduff’s noble efforts leading to the country’s victory and Atticus’ passion towards fighting for equality. However, the outcomes and influences of their ambition vary from achieving success to making a positive impact in their society.
