Advertising Saves Lives
Fraser Coast Anglican College school student Madeleine Jordon believes that graphic, hard-hitting and reliable advertisements are the most effective.
Advertising is very effective when what is being shown is real and relevant to everyday people. Some images in advertisements are very graphic and quite frightening. Advertising is also very effective when it comes from a reliable source such as the government.
Ice is one of the most addictive and destructive drugs that people illegally access. Ice affects the substance abuser in many different ways, such as: physically, mentally and it also affects their behaviour. But not only does it affect the substance abuser it affects their family, their friends and their community.

At the beginning of the advertisement Dr Stephen Priestley, district director of Emergency Medicine in the Sunshine Coast Health service, states that “… ice is destroying lives…”, and as you watch the rest of the advertisement there are very graphic images which show exactly what he is talking about.
The first strong graphic image in the advertisement is set in a home when Nick, the son, takes money from his mother’s purse and as she is pleading for him to stay but he hits her knocks her to the ground. Also in this scene, there is a little girl sitting at the kitchen table watching the situation unfold. It is heart wrenching when there is a close up of her face staring at Nick, after he hit and shoved his mother over. Victorian health and drug policy boss John Ryan told the Herald Sun “… it is clear the methamphetamine can affect people and their families quickly…”
Another graphic image is used when there is a young woman, a substance abuser, scratching at her skin. She does this because, as Dr Priestley said in the advertisement, some ice users dig at their skin because they feel like there are bugs crawling underneath.
