The Effects of Stereotyping – The elderly are stereotyped daily as knowledgeable, experienced, caring and sensible these are examples of positive discrimination however sometimes unfortunately the elderly are stereotyped as, frail, unhappy, senile, needy, and inactive and many more these are known as negative discrimination. The effects of negative discrimination can disturb or make a person ill. Negative discrimination can stop an elderly person from enjoying fully their latter part of life, this can affect their health and well-being. The elderly are often more vulnerable to age discrimination causing names aimed at them to become embedded causing physiological harm this could cause a person to give up and become withdrawn from daily living experiences such as washing, dressing, eating, socialising and even walking, they may feel like they have to follow the stereotyped names.
Negative discrimination can make a person feel marginalised from society making them stand out from everyone else, this could affect their self-esteem and confidence even making them feel embarrassed. The elderly can feel disempowered meaning stereotyping can make them believe they are senile, frail, and miserable they have a poor identity of themselves. The behaviour of the elderly can be effected by stereotyping they can become aggressive towards others blaming it on everyone this can effective socializing and activities stopping brain activity and motor skills, it could also cause a person to lose their appetite and this would eventually lead to malnutrition.
For the person doing the stereotyping this may lead to them having less opportunity in jobs and trust this will cause aggression or even violence against the company and even the service user. It may even cause them to be stereotyped. The company or business is effected also due to having to take actions further and to court if the
