Ella is Malcolm X’s half-sister from his father’s first marriage. Malcolm describes his sister has a proud black woman and being proud and her skin color was jet black like her father and the way she carried herself with pride and invested in property and he stated “she was in society. (p 39). Ella took an interest in Malcolm and was concerned with his education and asked Ella would praise him when he receives good grades in school. She took on a mother figure in Malcolm’s life and was responsible for assisting him on his move to Boston after his custody hearings, being transferred to a nicer prison, upon his release from prison being sent to Detroit instead of Boston, and gave him money to take his trip to Mecca and his transformation of his life from negative to positive.

Even though Malcolm was at the top of his class, his teacher, Mr. Ostrowski, stated,” But you've got to be realistic about being a nigger. A lawyer that's no realistic goal for a nigger. You need to think about something you _can_ be” (p. 43) He felt no matter how smart he was he would still be considered a nigger, and this is when he decided to change inside. His ability to want to belong and not live in poverty drove him to a life of crime, drugs, and burglary to be a part of something. Honestly, I do not know how I would handle it because if your goals are crushed and the time is saying you cannot be this.
