A few years ago, only 38.6% of African Americans successfully completed high school, compared to 63.7% of whites. From 1954 to 1968, the United States went through a period of racial segregation, mainly in its Southern states. This unfair separation of African Americans and whites led to a 14-year fight for equal rights, a fight now known as the Civil Rights Movement. However, African Americans relied on leaders to get their equal rights, such as Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Both leaders had drastically different views on the issue and how it should be solved. King’s philosophy in modern society to deal with our struggles by working together and achieving harmony in the process. The second reason for Martin Luther King’s philosophy prevailing is because of his methods of dealing with economic issues. King stood for equal job positions and payments for all, refusing to give up until they were obtained. King explained how boycotts were successful in their non-violent fight for higher wages and job positions for African Americans (Doc 6). Although Malcolm X was definitely not supportive of unequal opportunities, he favored self-resolution instead. For jobs, Malcolm explains that protests like boycotts are a waste of time and that instead, African Americans should learn to create their own industries and jobs (Doc 7). From their explanations, one can conclude that King favors everybody working alongside each other and earning equal wages, whereas Malcolm prefers the creation of separate jobs and wages. In our contemporary society, economic and employment inequalities are serious issues. With this in mind, King’s approach leans more towards their resolution than does Malcolm’s. This is due to Martin’s philosophy matching the goals of the modern fight for equality, those being equal pay and
