In his literacy narrative “Literacy Behind Bars,” Malcom X’s thesis is how studying in prison leads him to improving his literacy skills, and others believing that Malcom has a better education. While reading, Malcom skips words that he doesn’t know with little knowledge of what is happening in a book; eventually he picks up a dictionary and looks up the words that he doesn’t understand. After prison, Malcom reads every chance he can get, improving his literacy skills. Many can’t believe that Malcom has never been in high school. Malcom states, “This impression is due entirely to my prison studies” (para.1)
