Peggy McIntosh’s paper has 46 examples/conditions showing what she believes are “White” and/or “Male” privileges that a certain group of individuals in our country have that the most us do not. According to Dictionary.com, Privilege is defined as: a right, immunity, or benefit enjoyed only by a person beyond the advantages of most or a special right, immunity, or exemption granted to persons in authority or office to free them from certain obligations or liabilities. I feel that even though our way of thinking has changed over the years, many in our society are still stuck in their antiquated ways of thinking. These stood out to me because I can still remember back when I was a teenager and even into my twenties, sometimes my friends and I would be followed when we went to certain malls or entered certain stores. And, it still happens occasionally here and there. Even though it angers me, I have learned how to deal with these types of people and their assumptions or prejudices towards me. Discrimination can happen to anyone, at anytime and anywhere.
Managing diversity in today’s workplace will always be a complex issue. However, leadership’s commitment to diversity will offer the needed cultural atmosphere that motivates inclusion.
