What is a Metro Ethernet network? A Metro Ethernet network is a MAN or a metropolitan area network that uses the Ethernet’s technology with the combination of fiber optics. The speed of the network usually is between 400 MBs to 1 Terabyte per second. Most businesses are going to this new form of communications and IPS (Internet Service Providers) are listing. One provider which is Comcast has took the lead in providing network speed to cities and communities for business productivity. Comcast Metro Ethernet services are delivered using the Company’s industry leading fiber-based IP network. Unlike competitive carriers that simply resell the phone company’s network, Comcast is giving customers a true alternative network to maximize the performance and reliability of their business communications and applications. Comcast delivers bandwidth from 1 Mbps up to 10 Gbps that can be remotely scaled in increments of 1 Mbps, 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps, and offered with three different classes of service. Comcast is the first carrier of Metro Ethernet services to have all three certifications from the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF 9, 14 and 18), which are backed by strict service level agreements, and monitored 24x7x365 from Comcast’s dedicated Network Operations Centers. There are several reason for Comcast to deliver this technology to the consumer. The reason are:
• Scalability
• Reliable
• Cost
These four reasons is the vehicle which Comcast build its reputation on to compete on a national scale.
Scalability is very importation in the information technology age. To grow and expand a network helps to make the necessary adjustment for any company needs. There are some times grow is not the best way to handle a network but the shrink the network because of green technology or just because of cost. A Metro Ethernet Network does give that flexibility. As a business grows the network can grow but it can grow within its limits. The Ethernet protocol guarantees that any device that is connected to the network can communicate with one another as long it is on the network. This mean that Comcast can monitor the progress of the existing network in place as well as scale the network with very little effort. This is work keeps the network reliable for years to come Reliable of the MAN Ethernet network plays an important role to manage the level of security and production that goes through the network. When dealing with a network of the caliber there are obstacles that will come across its path. These are building infrastructures such as walls, distance from one repeater to anther and human error. To work around these difficulties planning and communication has to take place. Understand the nature which the network much operate can reduce a lot of these problems. There are going to be some errors the network will have to experience during the scalability sections when it comes to planning. But, after everything has been test, the network should meet the requirement of 99.9 percent up time that most companies
