Surrealism was a style of art and literature developed in the 20th century that stresses the imaginary figures of images in your own selves’ inner mind. One of the greatest and most famous artist in this time period is Man Ray. His real name was Emmanuel Radnitzky. He was born on August 27th, 1890 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died on November 18th, 1876 in Paris, France. Man Ray was a painter, photographer, and filmmaker. Ray was one of the only American artist to play a major role in the development of both Dada and Surrealism. He was a son of a photographer and he grew up in New York, where he first became an artist.

There were three major people who influenced Ray and his work. The first person was Alfred Stieglitz. Ray was a regular visitor at Alfred’s Gallery. Here he was exposed to popular art trends and movements. Here he also learned a new appreciation for photography. Another great influence was Marcel Duchamp. In 1915 Ray met these great artists. Like Duchamp Ray started to produce ready-mades. One of his best known was The Gift. Which was tacked glued to a flat iron. Duchamp and Ray began to collaborate together. They soon formed a The New York group of Dada artists. One of the most notable influence was Tristian Tzara. Tzara admired Ray’s rayographs. Ray soon moved to Paris and became affiliated with groups of Dada and Surrealist artist.

Soon he experimented with solarization. He was one of the first artists to use this process. Ray also persisted with fashion and portrait photography. His photographs were published in famous magazines all over the world. He continued to us photography called, Portraiture. One of his most famous forms of Portraiture was a picture lady three pairs of eye. Another one of his well-known pieces was called Violon d’Ingres, which was a photo of a nude lady in which he photographically added sound holes to her
