One example of their economy skills is they, “Trapped and prepared furs, but they also acquired furs and hides by trading maize and items received from the traders to the nonagricultural tribes of the region”(source D). This shows how the Mandan were a very intellegent tribe that controlled the fur trade to become a very wealthy tribe. Moreover, this shows that the Mandan were a common target of raids because of their wealth. Another example of the Mandan’s economy is, “The decline of the fur trade was accompanied by an increased military and bureaucratic presence that provided employment opportunities for men as woodcutters, scouts, teamsters, interpreters, and agency employees”(source D). This shows how the Mandan’s economy decreased once the fur trade declined since most of the Mandan’s wealth came from fur tradding. Moreover, once the fur trade declined many white men took employment opportunities for men as woodcutters, scouts, teamsters, interpreters, some of these new opening jobs affected the Mandan’s economy.
