A large portion of the Canadian colonies joining is due the US’s influence. This being the ‘manifest destiny’, their place in the civil war, and the purchase of Alaska. The ‘manifest destiny’ from was a part of the 19th century where America said they would claim their land from coast to coast, because “it had become the nation’s “manifest destiny” to extend its influence beyond its continental boundaries into the pacific and caribbean basins”. The Fenial raids pressured Britain to leave Ireland, to weaken the colonies through war and made it harder to interact with the US. First of all who are the Fenians? The Fenians were a secret society of Irish patriots who had emigrated from Ireland to the US. In 1866 to 1871 the Fenians engaged in a series of small, armed incursions of Canada. Both the British and Canadian officials took the threat posed seriously, and got spies to watch the Fenians. The reason of the raids were simply because they wanted to push the British leave Ireland- as well as the patriots had nothing better to do. As mentioned before the Fenians were based in the US, and although the authorities arrested the men and took their arms, it is said that the US turned a blind eye to preparations for the invasion.
