Maps have always been vital parts of world history. When created maps help people know about the land the they live in, or are about to adventure into. They are tools to be used by people. During the 15th century most of the people that had maps were wealthier people. Through time, as these maps become maybe less accurate or less important, they still show a window into the time period that they were made. They help current researchers see how land was divided, or how wars were fought, etc. Maps can also be works of art. A mappamundi is a type of map that puts more effort into the art of it. People were striving to learn more and see more in the world. It was also a highly religious time period, which can be seen in the amount of religious symbols in the maps. The amount of religious symbols differs compared to a world like today. It was also a small world in the eyes of the Europeans. At this time period the Americas were about to be discovered which would change how maps were made in a significant way. Comparing this world to other worlds in the same time is significant from someone not European. For someone in a country like Africa a map like this would mean little because a lot of their land is depicted as red flames. This map poses so many questions that I would like to look into. One small detail of the mappamundi that catches my eye is the small faces surrounding the map. What were their actual purpose? What inspired them? Why aren’t they on other mappamundi’s? To look into this, utilizing the AGS Library would be a great start. But also learning about history of the time period. How were cartographers in Italy different from cartographers in other parts of the world. Looking into whether location of the person influenced their decision on the small
