At a young age, Marco Polo’s mother dies and he was raised by his extended family since his father wasn’t there take care of him because Niccolo his father along with his uncle Maffeo was in a long-term trading expedition. At first, Niccolo and Maffeo spent there six years in Constantinople (Istanbul, Turkey now) which is under Latin control and the Fourth Crusade of 1204. Then after spending their six years in Constantinople, then two brothers went to the port of Soldaia (Sudak, Ukraine now) which they own a house. When the two brothers went in China to meet Kublai Khan, Kublai decided to give them a friendly mission to the pope and test them on European affairs, then the two brothers went back to Venice, wherein for the first time Marco Polo and his father Niccolo met. Niccolo and Maffeo traveled in a boat to Acre (Israel, present-day) with Marco two year later. As requested of Kublai, from the church of Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, they saved some holy oil and returned to Acre to get some gifts, papal documents and two newly elected priests by Pope Gregory X. But the two priests deserted the expedition, but the Polos family continue and possibly rode by the camels to the Persian port of Hormuz.
