Marcus Cocceius Nerva was born into a wealthy household a few miles north of Rome on November 8, 30 AD. His ancestors were part of councils and high offices. His father was a rich layer and his grandfather member of the imperial entourage and his great-grandfather was a consul. As a boy, Nerva grew up following his father and grandfathers ways of doing things. He showed political talent growing up and later began to hold many political positions in his community. He was awarded many honors and later became emperor. Nerva was in his sixties when he gained power and was often ill and vomited up all the food he ate. He was an old ruler but he was a kind and smart as well. Although he was old and ill he was considered childless. He was an old powerful man that was popular and intelligent. Senators loved Nerva and gave him the name Pater Patriae, meaning "Father of the Country." He built storehouses for grain and built infrastructure. He swore to never execute any senators, even when senator Calpurnius Crassus was guilty against him, he kept his word.
