As people live and do what they need to do to survive; some of their actions can be seen as only for that person’s benefit. It is at those times that others want to call that person selfish. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word selfish as “concerned excessively or exclusively with oneself: seeking or concentrating on one's advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others” (“Selfish”). Such a definition is no longer accurate. The new selfishness can be defined as having self-love or a strong sense of self-preservation as this would show that it’s not merely about being self-absorbed but about having a drive for oneself to attain personal goals.
The first reason the word selfish or selfishness should be updated because there can be selfishness but with the consideration of others. As the original version stated earlier from Webster’s dictionary selfishness is solely for the individuals that are so focused on their goals and needs that they disregard the needs of others.
