Garvey was born in Jamaica in 1887. He was raised by both of his parents, Marcus Moisha Garvey, Sr. and Sarah Jane Richards, but his father had a greater influence in his life even though Garvey was the youngest of the 11 children his parents did have. Garvey Sr. had owned a library, and this was where Marcus Garvey had learned to read ( ). At the age of 14 Garvey had dropped out of school to become a printer apprentice and had even taken part in the unsuccessful printer strike and this is where his passion for political activism had oriented from. He felt so powerful for standing up for something even if it meant that he failed. The leadership skills that he held were self-pride and self-determination. Great attributes one should hold to be classified as a leader. Garvey’s self-pride would motivate anyone to want to have as much confidence as him. Especially when he would talk so highly about the African Americans in the different areas. Garvey shows a great deal of determination because no matter how many times he was pushed back or down he always got up to keep fighting. A great example would be after the incident with Black Star
