Planned Parenthood was founded by Margaret Sanger in 1916 when she opened America’s first birth control clinic in New York. In 1923 she opens the Birth Control Clinical Research Bureau, providing women with contraceptive devices. In 1936 Sanger is arrested and the judge of her case rules that contraceptive devices and birth control is no longer to be considered obscene. In 1963 Colorado liberalizes their abortion law. Over the next three years, 13 states follow suit. In 1965, court case Griswold v. Connecticut “strikes down state laws prohibiting the use of contraceptives by married couples”. In 1973, famous court case Roe v. Wade recognizes the constitutional right to privacy and women’s right to choice. In 1976 Planned Parenthood presented a case that rid of the state requirement for parents and spousal consent for a woman to obtain an abortion. After this, Planned Parenthood fell victim to violence such as arson and bombings. In 1987 President Reagan issued a gag rule, forbidding clinics from providing information about abortions.
