While Gertrudis and Treviño make the syrup, Treviño’s obedience and respect towards Gertrudis despite the fact that she is a woman is an example of the role women played during the Mexican Revolution. Although many were female soldiers, some like Gertrudis rose the ranks to become generals and lead many men and women through battle. Margarita Neri, a soldadera, played an important part in the revolution. Neri did not assume the expected role of a submissive female and fought for the liberation of Mexico from dictator Diaz, by becoming a general. She is known for being ruthless and lead over a thousand soldiers through Tabasco and Chiapas.
