In the book; With a sword in my hand, by Jean-Claude van Rijckeghem and Pan van Beirs, Marguerite struggles to achieve the standards expected of her. Her father Medieval society set quite clear and specific gender roles for men and women. For women, they were quite limited and shallow, focusing mainly on their looks, and lady like behaviour. As a women in medieval Flanders, marguerite had very particular expectations set out for her , but refused to follow or fit into the role that she was expected to play as the countess of Flanders.

Marguerites behaviour throughout the book shows that she did not fulfil the roles expected of her. As a woman, it wasn't normal of her to think for herself, or act on her own terms.
"You don't need to think
