First, Maria Salomea Sklodowski was born on November 7th, 1867, in Warsaw, Poland. Her youth, and education explain how she began her path to fame. As a child, Maria Sklodowski had three sisters and one brother (Quinn 19). They were named Zofia Sklodowski, who was born in 1862, Jòzef Sklodowski, who was born in 1863, Bronia Sklodowski, whose birthday is in 1865, and Helena Sklodowski, born in 1866. Maria Sklodowski was the youngest, born in 1867 (Quinn 19). The Sklodowskis lived on Freta Street for seven years. They moved to the home after their mother was hired as a school principal (Quinn 18-19). Once living together, Maria Sklodowksa’s mother felt her relationship with her husband being strained and found out that her marriage was harder than she expected it to be (Quinn 19). He disliked the school girls coming into the apartment and invading his space. Also, they were also living in the back, without the windows and the balcony (Quinn 19). During her childhood, the country of Poland was under many rules. Furthermore, the section where Maria Sklodowski lived was considered Russian Territory (Quinn 17-18). Three years before Maria Sklodowski was born, Polish citizens were defeated in the January Uprising, and were still under Russian rule (Quinn 17-18). After boarding school, she attended a gymnasium, a higher education standing school for smarter children.
