When one hears about Mariachi, many think of serenading, a picture painted repeatedly by the media in the United States. This is not the case, Mariachi is defined by more than that. Mariachi is a small ensemble of folk-derived music originating in Mexico, consisting of many chordophones and dating back to the 19th century. It also refers to individual instrumentalists and vocalists in the ensemble (1). On Thursday, I had the honor of attending a Mariachi event performed not only by the University of Houston Varsity Pumas but also the Junior Varsity mariachi, and the Youth All-Star Varsity Mariachi orchestral groups at the Moores Opera House. Throughout the performances, the focus was on the music and its performers and later it was primarily on the dancers accompanying the music. The focus on the music changed depending on the routine being performed: solo, duets, or dance performances with the music as the background. This performance was by no means meant to be the background of a party, there were no refreshments provided, however, in a more informal context, this could be a possibility. The music was played with many purposes in mind, including in memorial of lost loved ones, in celebratory manners, celebration of community, culture, and lived experiences as well as engaging with the audience, many of whom were familiar with songs played.
