As generations go by and time passes, the pursuit of love and the concept of achieving love changes. Love dates back as long as humans have existed. Animals and humans create long-lasting relationships that signify love and dedication. Unfortunately, for many others, a relationship is nothing but a status symbol or an exchange for land or power. Arranged marriages have always been a way of gaining something, and that does not have to include love. Marie de France, a French poet, delved into the romantic culture of her time with her lais; thus, allowing her readers to get a glimpse of marriages, arranged marriages, and other concepts. Women's parents may be moved to allow their daughters to marry for love, or they may be more willingly flexible in choosing who to marry their daughters to. However, The Lady's effect and influence may advise women to disregard their parents' opinions about their love affairs to avoid misery, separation of their love, and losing the possibility of finding their one real lover. Back then, with arranged marriages, there was a huge chance that it lacked love and admiration. Marriages without love most likely turn into hatred or resentment. Most of the time, the Lord and his Lady are not in an amicable situation. This can lead to the poor treatment of their wives as they have the power. She has little say in what she can do and will quite possibly suffer. I think Marie de France tries to show that marriage with arrangement is not ideal.
