At the start of the book it seems that she survived the blood fever perfectly. She is Sir Martino Amoutero favorite daughter. She very close to Adelina and tries to help Adelina from their father’s wrath. Also there is Sir Martino Amouteru, the father of Adelina and Violetta. He is a very clever man who thinks of his daughters as tools. He was once a merchant, but after the blood fever struck his trade suffered, resulting in the downfall of his business. There is also a group called “The Young Elites” This is also a name given to Malfettos (people who survived the blood fever) that arose from the blood fever with superpowers. They are hunted by the inquisition and are treated as monsters by everyone. The young elites are mostly in their of teenager years, hence they are called Young Elites. There is also Inquisitors Axis(antagonists). Also known as the king’s peacekeepers, they are pretty much the police force of Kenettra. Kenettra is where the novel takes place. This Inquisition is led by Teren Santoro, they hunt down and kill Young Elites. Adelina, as we are made aware of lot of moments in her childhood that foreshadow her later to be connected to darkness in the novel. For example, shortly after Enzo saves Adelina from the Inquisition, she dreams of when they were younger. When her sister Violetta is eight, she is ten and she “kills” a butterfly. Adelina describes this dream as a time when she and her sister are still innocent(Lu pg.76). This quote refers to the end of innocence theme that is in the novel. At the beginning of the novel we met an Adelina that, despite the nightmares she has experienced, still has a somewhat innocent view of herself and her world. When Adelina kills her father and when she helps Teren kill Enzo, we are witnessing the end of Adelina’s innocence. Later, at the end of the novel, Adelina realizes and accepts the fact that she is no longer an innocent. Rather, she declares it is her turn to be the “monster”, to be the one that causes pain.
