Marielle Franco: A Heroine and Why When thinking of the word “hero”, many peoples’ minds might go to fictional superheroes with extraordinary abilities. However, the term “hero” characterizes many more people. Marielle Franco was an Afro-Brazilian politician and huge advocate for human rights. As a child she lived and grew up in the favelas of Brazil and was around constant danger and unsteadiness. As she got older, in order to address the human rights injustices and in Rio de Janeiro, Franco focused on politics and getting her voice heard. However, in the midst of her recognition, she was shot and killed, along with her driver.
