“Marigolds”
In the story “Marigolds” the author Eugenia W. Collier has a coming of age experience. Since she has grown older she looks back and still feels haunted about destroying Miss Lottie's Marigolds. She talks about the story in a reflective type of way.
The way the author sets the tone in this story is saying “Joy and rage and wild animal gladness and shame become tangled together in the multi colored skein of fourteen-going-on-fifteen as I recall that devastating moment when I was suddenly more women than a child.” With this quote the author is conveying that after she destroyed the marigolds she looks back and realizes that she was actually growing up. After she lets out all her frustration and anger she turned into more of a women.
