I think this will be a priority for Karen as the case study states: “Karen's adult life revolved around drinking, as her husband, his family, and several of their friends also drank heavily.” Karen’s sobriety depends upon her living environment being free of ‘triggers’ a spouse who drinks is a huge trigger. The husband is quite possibly an alcoholic himself as the verbage in the case study states: ’drinks heavily’. The optimal course would be for the husband to recognize his need for treatment and go into a recovery program. This could be an ethical issue as if the husband fails to recognize his own drinking addiction and fails to seek treatment Karen may have to choose her sobriety or her husband. I think while Karen is in the treatment center a family session would be in order, and the husband’s drinking could be addressed. If he is also willing to seek treatment, together with separate sponsors they could be a support system one to another.
