Performance art is perhaps the most unique way an artist can portray their intentions in making their art. It requires the artist to be honest and vulnerable in ways that can put themselves at great risks. As Marina Abramovic puts it, “When you perform it is a knife and your blood, when you act it is a fake knife and ketchup.” I couldn’t get Abramovic’s The Artist Is Present out of my head; I wondered for a while what made the work so special that it attracted such a tremendous amount of attention. This performance takes the relationship between the performer and the audience to another level. Since the work is an exchange between Marina and her audience, it’s easy to say that it conveyed different meanings for both sides. She’s sitting across from thousands of strangers she has no clue about, while the audience, at the very least, has an idea of her as an artist. To be honest I’m not sure if she’s sitting there as a person or as her public image suggests, a persona. This actually makes no difference for Marina’s point of view because, as I’ve come to appreciate her career and her works, she simply finds ways to challenge herself. Even after having such an impact in the art world and becoming a celebrity-artist, the purpose of her art remains the same: a pursuit for validation, peace, comfort, happiness and love. The ways in which she does that may come as masochistic to some but I see her pain inflict in a different light, as I’m sure a lot of the people who admire her do. I think with the pain she has endured during her performances, she has constantly tested her
