The Marine Otter evolved first from the Sea Otter and then again from the River Otters. The Marine Otter is the smallest of the genus lontra. A couple of traits of the Marine Otter are: 900 mm in length, dark fur, short tail, fully webbed feet, and stiff whiskers. The Marine Otters live in marine environments found along the Pacific coast from northern Peru and the coast of Chile. The Marine Otter preys on invertebrates, fish, birds, small mammals and sometimes fruit. Its predators are mainly killer whales and sharks. An environmental trait that is helpful for the Marine Otters is that its dark fur and webbed feet help it not be seen as easily and escape predators. The Marine Otters subfamily is the Lutrinae.
