Marius Petipa, fully known as Victor Marius Alphonse Petipa, or famously recognized as "the father of classical ballet", was born in the humble city of Marseilles, France in the 11th of March in 1822. Marius was born into a family full of talent; his father, Jean Antoine Petipa, was a French dancer, choreographer, & actor, and his mother, Victorine, was a drama teacher & actress. The Petipa parents introduced both Marius Petipa and his older brother by three years, Lucien Petipa, to follow the same artistic path.

He excelled quickly and soon Marius came to love the art of dance, later on becoming a full-fledged dancer & choreographer, whilst Lucien became a ballet master & dancer at the Paris Opera.

Despite the great success they were achieving, they were forced to move to Bordeaux in 1834, and then to Nantes, because of the Belgian revolution, so the family was left in dire straits. Although Marius had moved, he became a principal dancer in Nantes, in 1838, as the family stayed for a while.

Later on, Marius and his father Jean toured North America in the year of 1839, after Marius had studied in Bordeaux with Auguste Vestris. There, Marius Petipa had performed as principal dancer in various ballets. Those ballets which include Giselle, La Fille mal Gardée, and La Péri. In La Péri, Marius was widely known for ages to come, because of his partnering with Carlotta Grisi. Apart from that, Marius Petipa also did the choreographies for his own pieces; La Vendange, Le Langage des fleurs , L’Intrigue amoureuse,
