Mark Kurlansky's 1968: The Year That Rocked The World

My assigned book was written by the award winning author, Mark Kurlansky. Kurlansky is white male and was born on December 7th, 1948 (7 years after Pearl Harbor attacks). He was born in Hartford, Connecticut and got a bachelor's degree in theater at Butler University. He began to write plays in New York and even won the 1972 Earplay award for best radio play of the year. He then later pursued journalism. Now since he was alive during the setting of his book “1968: The Year That Rocked the World”, this does contribute greatly to his bias. He even says in the introduction “I am stating my prejudices at the outset because even now… an attempt at objectivity on the subject of 1968 would be dishonest.” Here he is even giving a warning stating that he will have bias, but it’s key to have it to give more life to the …show more content…
The strongest factor to his bias is his age. While many writers have to research about their time periods, Kurlansky lived it. Because of this, we was able to choose which viewpoints applied to him on things such as the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia and the Mexico City Olympics. He generally chose to accentuate the rebellious side or what happened behind closed doors. In 1965, Ginsberg met with a Russian colleague who “told Ginsberg that he had heard many scandalous things about him but did not believe them… He explained that he was a homosexual and that was the reality he lived in, the scandals came from his willingness to speak openly about his experiences.” Kurlansky chose to add this quote not only to show his true self of being gay, but he wants to be open about it, which would be considered rebellious during this time period.
