In Mark Zuckerberg’s speech over data privacy and disinformation on social media, he apologizes for the previous mistakes he’s made and pushes for everyone to stand together to make Facebook a happy and positive community. Zuckerberg strengthens his declaration by taking accountability for Facebook’s shortcomings and illustrating the positive impact social media can have, if used correctly. His purpose is to first apologize for Facebook’s previous mistakes, and then reassure his audience that his company is working to make sure connections through Facebook are positive, and in doing so inspires his audience to also make sure social media is used for good. Zuckerberg uses an apologetic yet inspirational tone for his audience, the U.S. Senate’s Commerce and Judiciary committees. Zuckerberg also mentions that Facebook is used to help loved ones stay connected, as well as “for building communities and businesses”. By illustrating all of the good Facebook can bring, Zuckerberg’s audience is more likely to see the need to protect Facebook from those who wish to use it for harm. Because of the use of such powerful and positive messaging, Zuckerberg’s audience is more likely to join the fight to keep Facebook a positive community. As a result, Zuckerberg closes his speech with a call for action by reminding his audience that those who use Facebook for harm don’t only cause problems for Facebook, but that they cause “issues and challenges for all of us as Americans”. By declaring that the challenges Facebook faces are a challenge for the nation as a whole, Zuckerberg highlights the importance of unification to maintain Facebook as a place to positively impact the
