“Loving your enemies” is a sermon by Martin Luther King Jr. given in Montgomery, Alabama at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. The speech was given on 17 November 1957. King speaks about Jesus’ commandment to love everyone, even our enemies. His speech was majorly inspired by scripture. King says, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that”. To create change King tells us to analyze ourselves, realize the good, and to resist the urge to get revenge.
King tells us to look within ourselves to find something that would provoke hatred within someone else. Self reflection could make a big impact on the situation. He goes on to explain that even with self reflection some people still wont like you. They may not even have a reason from your actions but may not like you from something that you can’t change. Every person will have good traits and it’s important to try to recognize those. Seeing the good qualities will help outweigh the ones that are bad. Acknowledging those good qualities will help you not become entirely overwhelmed with the hatred and will leave more room for the positive. When you get overwhelmed with the hatred you end up destroying your own personality. King believes that loving others is more important than loving oneself.
