Mary Chesnut's Writing During The Civil War

During the Civil War, there were people who documented events. They captured every detail they saw so that the future could know what happened. Each writer had their view on politics, believed in something different, and had different reasons for writing. Though each writer had some similarities in some ways. Mary Chesnut was a subjective person, in writing. She put how she felt about the events into her writing. Randolph, however, told facts as they were. His feelings and opinions were left out of the details. Since Randolph left personal views out of his writing, he is more reliable than Mary. Mary sided with the South during the war. Mary stated,"Now he tells me the attack upon Fort Sumter may begin tonight," where the North had set up camp, indicated that she is with the South. Randolph also sided with the South as he was a Confederate soldier. Randolph stated that he fought with the 10th, 23rd, and 37th regiments, which were all southern units. …show more content…
