The opening statement in Mary Hays Memoirs of Emma Courtney should not be taken seriously by its readers. It contradicts itself throughout the entire statement. Hays is undermining emotion in the opening of her novel, when in all reality the character of Emma is an emotionally driven woman. It seems as though the author is poking fun at the characters before the novel even starts which makes us question how seriously she takes her own characters. It could be that Hays understands that some people will not be able to relate to her characters and is therefore poking fun at the aspects of them people may not enjoy.
