On August 16th, 1865, Cotta Wall, which is one of the new region in New South Wales in Australia, saw the birth of eldest child of Donaled and Mary Anne. They named their child Mary.
When Mary was in her first year, her parents decided to move to Wagga Wagga which is another region in New South Wales. She grew up as the doughter of an intinerant worker, a carpenter. At 16, she passed a formal entrance examination and began as a probationary pupil-teacher at the public school.
In October 1887, Mary was appointed as temporary assistant Silverton public school near Broken Hill. At that time she began writing poetry as a teacher at Silverton. While she was there that she developed the socialist views which marked her writing through out her life.
By 1890 the young Mary Cameron was living in Sydney some of her writing were published in the bulletin by the editor A.G Stephens. In May 1891 Mary was transferred to Stanmore Superior Public School. However, when she started writing her radical notice, she used different names to protect her teaching career during this time by writing under a pen -names such as Em Jacy, sister Jacy.
In 1896, mary went to Paraguay in south America to join a group of Australian who planned to set up a new colony, where everyone would be equal and work together. It was there that she met and married William Gilmore in 1897.
The following year they had their only child named William Dysart Cameron Gilmore
