Welcome everyone, thank you all for attending my presentation today. My name is Emerson and I am a high school student who is going to talk about a topic that I believe is not spoken about enough. So, I am here to express my thoughts and to use my experiences as a reflection as to why this topic should be spoken about more. Don’t worry, I’ve experienced it, I’ve seen it, and I’m sure many of you have. As the son of Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley once said “If you keep hiding your true self, your life becomes like a slow death. Once you become free from the lies and the hiding of yourself, then life becomes vibrant again.”

Firstly, I’m going to speak about what personality masking is and ultimately, the impact it could have on your mental health and what it may look like. What is a personality mask? Personality masking refers to the occurrence where individuals conceal their true personality traits, emotions or behaviours and instead present a different person to obey social norms. This masking can occur consciously or unconsciously and may be motivated by various factors such as desire for social acceptance, fear of judgement or rejection, or the need to fit into a particular social or professional environment. People may adopt different personas or behaviours depending on the context or social situation they find themselves in.
